Repinique
A lead and improvisational drum in samba, the repinique
is a small, usually metal, tenor drum worn on the shoulder or waist and
played with sticks. In Rio, they are 12" wide and played with one
stick and an open hand. In Salvador, they are known as repiques and have
10" heads. They are worn low and played with two long sticks. Also
from Salvador is the bacurinha. Only 8" wide and played like a repique,
they have a sharp, ear-piercing sound that cuts above the surdos and snare
drums. |
